Worm/Snake Hair

The reason for the name of this one is rather self explanatory. The girls love this one because they like to tell people they have worms in their hair. The above picture, unfortunately, was taken on Goose a couple years ago so I had to scan it in. I didn't do the full bun of them very often because it did take a while to make all the twists - so I had to dig through some old pictures to find it!

**** WARNING ---- Since posting this, I've had several people e-mail me on the "after results" of this hairdo. It CAN cause lots of knots from the twists and major 'fro head afterwards! My suggestion is do this hairdo on a day that you know your DD will be getting a bath once the day is over. Work the twists undone with your fingers, a wide toothed comb or pick - that helps. But working them out in the bath is helpful too, rather than trying to undo it the next day in preparation for your next hairdo. This is what I do, so hopefully it will help you too! *******

Doing a bun with snake twists is one option with this fun style, or the one we do more often is just a few on top of a pony tail (depending on the thickness of hair you may need more or less.) In the nature of jazzing up ponytails - here we go again!

To begin, just make a regular ponytail where ever you want it on the head. Lately, I've been offsetting them to one side or the other, also with a side part. Then pull small sections of hair from the top of the ponytail and get it quite wet (especially if your girl has some layers to her hair.) Start twisting.
Twist and twist and twist until it starts curling up on itself like so. Sorry if these pix are a bit blurry, my left hand isn't as steady! Once I get the desired tightness of the twist I kind of wrap the end around my finger to make a circle and then take that circle of hair and pin it down on her head with a bobby pin. (That's the little circle of hair between my thumb and pointer in the picture below.) It just gives the bobby pin more to grip onto then just a little wisp of hair.
With each twist, I kind of loop them and "snake" them around the other ones so they are kind of intermixed. Place bobby pins wherever you think they are needed to keep those little worms in place! And there you have it!
Yes, finally a smile! Told you she likes worms in her hair!
The girls friend was over the other day too, and she wanted wanted worms in her hair too! Her hair is a bit shorter than Bugs and has some layers, but it still worked out ok as long as I keep the twisted hair very wet. She usually wears her hair down & when I pulled her hair back away from her face, she thought she might "look like a boy" as she put it, so we put a few ringlets in the front and the pony on the side so that she could see it and then everything was ok! ;-)
I just loved this picture of her. She has amazing eyes!
I guess after thinking about it - you best call this "snakes" so your kids don't go around telling anyone that "they've got worms!!" :-) LOL!

  1. How creative! I love them above the pony, who needs a bow? I think that calling them snakes is probably a better idea :)

  7. We did this yesterday.

I had a meeting last night, and when I got home Daddy was putting the kids to bed.

I don't know if it was how he took them out, or my daughters hair, but she had the hugest 'fro! The absolutely frizziest halo I have seen in my entire life! It reminded me of when we used to tease our bangs in the 80s.... (grin)

    Is that normal?

  8. Charmed mom - Your right - who does need a bow with this one! You probably only need to do a few of these w/your dd's hair and it'd work quite nicely.

Becky - Yeah, if you only do a few snakes on top it truly does save time & looks neat. Thanks for checking us out!

Brynn - Glad you like this one. Wish there was some magic potion to make hair grow faster. Just remember all these once your dd's hair is long enough!

HairMom - Glad your dd liked it. Hopefully if you tried it, it worked out good and that she thought it looked as cool!

AmyLu - Ha ha ha!! Totally LOL! Yes, it is quite freaky! Like some of the other hair bloggers, I don't wash the girls hair daily, so I plan this one for the days they have a bath so it's not crazy for the next day. It also can cause quite the knots. It does make quite the fro - so yes, that is what happens - but no, I guess it isn't "normal" since it looks quite wild! No need to be alarmed!

  9. Love the do but with half or all the hair in wormies but how the heck to you keep it from being huge tangly knots afterward? Maybe it is just my dd's really fine/thin hair, but it was torture to brush out. Any hints?

  10. Bonny - This is rather typical of this 'do unfortunately. When I do this one, I always plan it on the day they'll be getting a bath that evening so it can be worked out that way, rather than brushing it out. I do try, however, to undo them with my fingers as much as possible and maybe my pick or wide toothed comb to prevent major "owies." Sorry, we encounter this too. It's an unfortunate side-affect!

  11. I love the bun! My daugher is a gymnast with rather long hair so I am always looking for new "meet do's". How secure is the bun? It looks as though it would last 4 events if I put plenty of pins in it. What are your thoughts? Thanks!

  12. I just became a follower! I found you through blog A to blog B and now...here I am! I'm glad I found your blog and will let me daughters know about you too. Your three are beautiful little hair models.

Our girly-whirlies are in dental school now, but growing up, they were at the mercy of my hair do creations... sometimes, we'd wonder what was I thinking haha

Our younger daughter is home for a a couple of weeks and just the other day asked me to do a french braid...yay! lots of fun! (can't wait til I can do this with grandbabies...our oldest just got married).

Our son is a cancer survivor, so from 2005 to 2007 he had a range of hair styles-cool shaggy soccer dude do; bald from the chemo do; peach fuzzy do; long, gorgeous ringlet do (grew out to donate to Locks of Love); bald again do (post donation); etc

When it was long, you could spot him on the soccer field or lacrosse field with various topknots and up dos haha (FYI-we are thankful that he is doing great, and is strong and healthy...with whatever hair he chooses to sport ;o)

well, again I'm glad I came across your blog!
    Blessings & Aloha!
and if you get a chance to take a peek at my blog, please leave a comment so that I know you came by.

  13. I wore my hair like that to prom more years ago then I want to say. It was very cute! I sprayed each section of hair heavily with spray gel before I twisted it. I then used those thicker bobby pins that are meant for updos to hold each section down. Through the night, some of the pins fell out and I was left with a few very tight spiral curls falling out, which made it even more cute. This hair do is great for casual or very dressy and is so fun. The biggest bonus it can be easily done even by someone who cannot braid or on yourself (I cannot braid my own hair).
