Ribbon Headband

Sorry for the lack of posting lately. I've got just 2 words -- Potty Trianing. 'Nuf said! (If any of you have any sage words feel free to impart them - as things aren't going well!)

So - any of you have an extra cute piece of ribbon laying around the house? Don't know what to do with it because it's not enough to make a bow or something out of it? Well, that's me for sure. And if you've been around my blog enough to know, headbands were not my fav, but as we've come up w/new ways to use them, I've started loving them.

Normally if you were to just tie a ribbon around your head for a headband, chances are it doesn't stay in - right? Falls out within no time? Or if you tie a scarf on or use a scarfed headband, you have that big knot at the nape of your neck, and then your hair separates in the back or it makes some funky bump in back from that knot?

If you have had any of those things happen, well then try this. It worked wonderfully for us, and stayed in all day.

Start by making "Barbie bangs" as we call them. These work great when you wear a real headband as well.

Part the hair off center on the side of your preference. Then part the hair from ear to ear. I took the rest of the hair hanging down in the back & pulled it up in a clip just to keep it out of the way for the time being.

Starting on the left side, once you've parted the hair out, take a tiny amount of hair from the nape of the neck, and combine it with the hair you are smoothing down on the left side. Secure them together with a rubber band. Repeat on the right side. Be sure to do this far enough under the hair in the back, so you can't see it from the side.
Then take your ribbon of choice and secure the end of it with another rubber band to the "ponytail" you made making your Barbie bangs.
Bring the ribbon over the top of the head, towards the other ear. Be sure to pull it so it's snug, or it will just slide off her head like a normal ribbon would. Again, using a rubber band secure it to your little ponytail underneath the hair. You could probably do this whole thing in 2 steps, securing the ribbon at the same time you do the ponytail, but I wanted to make sure the hair laid right for me first, before I added the headband.
That's it - you're done. I wish I would have had the ribbon sitting a little bit more forward, but it still worked nicely and stayed in without any problems. Best part was, she really couldn't even tell it was there - no tight headband bugging her, or no worries of her loosing the ribbon.
Funny thing was - she wore this to church & her primary class teacher said, "Oh, look she doesn't have her hair done today!" I was thinking - what the heck? Yes she does. But I guess normally it's up and "fancier" or curled and she was just "normal" looking to her teacher or something! Anyway, let me know if this trick works for you using a ribbon this way!

  1. I love it. It so simple, but I never would have thought of it on my own. Thanks! And, good luck with the potty training. That is my least favorite part of parenting (so far).

  2. Potty training is up there with them losing their teeth (you know wiggling then all around in front of you!!! Oh yuk!) Pray a lot!

  3. LOVE IT! I will try it tomorrow. Good luck with the potty training. We just bribed the heck out of our second one but she was nearer to three years old. Our first was closer to just turning two and she just thought it was a fun game. Havent tried the little guy yet but we just had a new baby so we will probably wait until next summer when he can just run around naked!

  4. I LOVE that idea! Thanks!

Sorry- No great ideas on poty training except don't push it if she's not ready. I tried with my twins and one was ready, but the other resisted. So I worked with one and when her sister was ready (a few weeks later)she joined in.

  6. HAHAHAHAHA!!!! I love it:) The part about your daughter's sunday school teacher:). I would've had the same reaction! I could totally hear the voice in your head that said that! I have had people say that to me before too when I had just done a nice side pony tail or something!

Good luck with the potty training! my 2 year old is not interested at all and my 6 year old was potty trained by the TIME she turned 2. They are all different. Good luck!

  7. Thank you for this gorgeous do. My 8yo has a short bob hair cut, and I did this for school this morning and put a flower on the side, she looked SO adorable (if I do say so myself). Thanks for the great idea, and versatile for both short and long hair. love it!

  8. both my older girls were 2 and a half when they were ready for potty training, seemed to be the magic age for them. My second daughter is very stubborn and i was concerned, but my husband wasn't going to make it a big battle. he just stopped putting diapers on her and for his two days off he reminded her to go in to the potty about every fifteen minutes, and he even took her to the store and used the potty at the store and everything, somehow it worked. my biggest advice is DON'T USE PULL UPS they're a waste! kids know what a diaper is, even if it's disguised like a pull up, they know they can pee in it, no incentive to use the real potty. and don't freak out over accidents....in the beginning it's parent training anyway, training us to remember to take them every so often till they start remembering on their own....good luck and love the bow idea!

  9. How cute is that?! I can't wait until I have a little girl to dress to dress up and stuff, awwwwww, I'm jealous now! hehe!

Good luck with potty training! I worked in daycare with 3-yr-olds. Most were potty trained but a lot had accidents now and then.. NOT. FUN.

haha! But it looks like you have several kids and experience :)

Oh, BTW I found ya through SITS! :)

  10. PS: You got black girl hair tips? hehe!

  11. Thanks for the tip. Headbands are always coming out of my girls hair. I'll have to give this one a try though.

I agree with the mom who says stay away from pull-ups. I've noticed with both my girls that they slow the process down. That said... I still put my 2 yr old in them at times. I just can't nurse a baby and clean up potty training messes at the same time! If she's just not "getting" that potty goes in the potty chair try letting her go (forgive the phrase) butt naked. It helped my girls to understand what was going on. Now I'm struggling with the fact that she knows what to do, but at times just doesn't want to (she's my strongwilled child!). My next idea is to provide the right incentive. For one child it might be stickers, for another raisins might work, another might go for "treats" or chocolate, or maybe try a sticker chart and when the chart is full she gets to pick out a toy at the dollar store (make sure it doesn't take too many stickers.). Just some thoughts. Every child is different!

  15. Thanks for checking out my newest recipe!

I suppose you could use white wine instead of the beer. Although, the chicken does not really taste like beer when it is cooked.
If you have you ever had bean soup in a Mexican restaurant, it tastes similar to that.

If you want to go non-alcoholic, you could try 6 oz. of chicken stock and 1 tbsp. of balsamic vinegar.

Let me know if you fix it! I would love to find out how it tastes sans beer! :)

  16. I used to teach toddlers and have potty trained over 100 kiddos (including 3 of my own!). I know exactly what to do that will work in less than a week, but it is very time consuming and you can't really go anywhere for 3 days unless you are VERY close to a potty. If you haven't gotten any other advice that you love, then let me know and I'll give you the steps. My prayers are with you!

  19. Hey Girl!

I am looking for a half-up look with a "bump" at the crown. Any ideas?

The style is for me, and my hair is layered (mid-length).
I'm shooting an outside wedding next month, and really need part of my thick hair pulled up.

I'd love to hear any suggestions! You are so talented; I had to come here first. :)
    Thanks!!!
