Pull Through & Baby Piggies

So I know this has probably been done elsewhere, but since my "baby" is turning 2 this week and her hair is finally getting long enough for some of this stuff, I just had to share! I've done this on her several times lately, but of course, the day I decide to actually document it, she wanted to move all over the place. So, sorry if the pictures are not the best.

This is how much hair Bee's got now - and she turns 2 this week. I have yet to trim it - and probably won't for a while. The sides are still a bit shorter than the back - but I don't think we've got the mullet look going on - so I'm in no hurry to cut it just yet!

I sectioned out the top of her head and put it into a pony tail, angling it off to the left side of her head - and then pulled it through underneath the rubber band. (I'm assuming most everyone knows how to do those by now. If you have a topsy tail or a special tool like that, they work great too.)
Then I parted her hair down the middle and made a little ponytail, and then left it as a loop, not pulling it through the rubberband the last time.
I don't leave it tight together in a loop though, I separate the hair out a bit like this. Then on the left side I join the hair hanging down from her ponytail that's on top of her head & join it into the ponytail on the side of her head. Once again - don't pull the ponytail all the way through. Add your choice of bow/flowers and you're done.

Since she wouldn't sit still in my bathroom once I was done, I put her in front of the computer & my fabulous friend sent funny stuff via IMing and it made her sit still for a few pictures! So here it is from on top.
From the back. The part isn't too shabby I'd say for a wiggly toddler!Ok, and since she's turning 2 - you get 2 of her cute little face "cheesing" it back at you! Yeah, so I chopped off the top of her head in this one, and it's a bit dark, but I just love her little crooked smile and chubby little cheeks!

And there you have it -- oh, but btw - she's not a fan of wearing the piggies for nap time or when she lays down on her back. I think all her little baby hairs that are growing out around the nape of her neck pull a bit too much for her liking - so keep that in mind when doing this one!

And if you haven't seen it yet -- it's Jenn's Birthday over at Girly Do's and she's have a FABULOUS giveaway. Can't beat that - her giving you stuff on her birthday! So go check it out HERE.

And of course, Madibu Bows is still having her giveaway so there's tons of fun stuff going on this week!

Corkscrew Video -Started w/o a Rubberband

I had an e-mail from "Curlygirz" this week asking about a corkscrew braid/twist (whatever you call them at your house!) She asked a question that I'd never had before. Now, I'm sure most of you know how to do these by now & I know there are several other blogs out there that have a video of these but for some this may still be helpful -- because the corkscrew isn't started from a rubberband.

Curlygirz said she had done this hairdo on one of her DD's ... but she couldn't figure out how to make a corkscrew start at the base of the head, and said she couldn't find a video where they hadn't started from a rubberband/ponytail.

So, if you already know how to do this with or without a rubberband - you can just ignore this post ... but for Curlygirz - this is for you! BTW - I tried e-mailing you but it was an invalid e-mail address & came back to me. Not sure why - but either way, hope this helps you and a few others.

Oh, and ignore the neat "bunny" nose stuff Goose has going on. She's been fighting a cold & I told her to keep her hands out of her face for the video -- so this is what I got instead! :) Also, to get these to look the best - damp or wet hair always works the best I think.

video

Here is the end result. Nice and smooth - with no rubberband at the beginning of it!

FYI - because I'm slow, it took me a while to get this! When I first started doing corkscrews I would split the hair in 2 and started twisting immediately (as some pro's may do) but for me it never laid right or looked smooth like I wanted it to. The only way I can get it to work for me is to pass the bottom strand over the top strand first and then start twisting. Everyone has their own methods - but that's what works for me.

This corkscrew was done on the right side of her head. If you do it on the left side I have to pass the top strand down over the bottom one and twist opposite from what I did on the right side of her head. Don't know if that makes sense or not - you just have to mess around with these to get them to work for you! :)

Braided Headband - Shared Hairdo Spin-off

As I promised yesterday, this is an additional way that you could do yesterday's hairdo that Christine so nicely shared with us. I know there have been all kinds of "fake headband" styles with braids, twists, etc. on other blogs & I don't know if there is anything like this elsewhere ... but I was just going off of what Christine had showed me - except ...

When I got to this point of the hairdo from yesterday (having done this on both sides):
And maybe you'd already thought this when you saw the above picture in yesterday's post .... but instead of taking the ends and pulling them upwards, I took them and fastened them underneath the back of Goose's hair, turning it into a head banded look instead.
So from the side, the braids hide underneath the back of her hair. As I mentioned yesterday, I needed to pull these ponytails tighter into the braid - but you get the idea.

And again, a view from the top.
This was her half-hearted smile when she found out she wasn't done! I made her get back up on the counter so I could do the "real" hairdo Christine had sent me! In the end she loved the "real" one best - but I just wanted to show you, that you could get 2 hairdo's out of the one!

Thanks again Christine for the fun idea. And once again, if you need the "how to" for this hairdo - it's the post below this one!

Shared Hair Do

I'm not so sure what to call this one, especially since it's not my own idea. This came from one of my readers - Christine. She sent this to me back after Thanksgiving when I'd done this hairdo. She said her DD's hair wasn't quite long enough to do anything like the bun, so she was inspired to come up with this instead. And - was kind enough to share it and is letting me share it with you guys. So if anyone has a name we can give this one - please send it my way!

So - here is the hairdo Christine sent me (her little girl has bangs, so this works just great with or without them): Here's Goose -
Here's her little DD. As you can see, she's got bangs up front that she didn't include in this part of the hairdo.
So - here's how she did it:

Start by making 7 little pony's across the crown of the head. I started with 1 dead center and then made 3 on each side of the head working down towards the ear. (You can only see 5 only see 5 of the 7 in this picture - there are 2 more on the right side of her head.)

Then divide the middle ponytail in half.
Take the left side of the middle ponytail and start making a regular braid - braiding down towards the next ponytail.
Once you get to the next ponytail, add the entire ponytail into the closest strand of the braid & incorporate it into your braid. You'll have 1 thicker strand of hair in your braid at the moment. I didn't get these pulled as tight as I'd of liked, but hopefully you get the idea. Continue braiding down towards the ear, and when you reach the next ponies do the same thing. And like I said, I didn't get these pulled as closely to the rubberband as I'd of liked.
On the right side of her head though, I did get it pulled tighter but my braiding wasn't the greatest at this point because Bee was at my knees giving me grief! Once you get done incorporating the last ponytail into the braid, continue on down and braid down a bit further - leaving hair free at the end & tie it off with a rubberband.

Once you've tied it off with a rubberband, bring the end of your braid back up towards the top center of the head where the middle ponytail is.Now this is where it's kind of hard to explain - although the process is not difficult at all. Take the end of your braid that is tied off with a rubberband and pass it back up underneath the skinny braid that you started branching off the very middle ponytail. This next pic is out of sequence, but I wanted you to see how it should look from above before you pull the braid back up. But thos braids branching off the center ponytail are what you will pass the end of your finished braid underneath.
So pull it forward towards the front of her face.

Do the same to the left side - maybe you can see it better in this picture. Ignore my lovely arm and half my body in this shot!
Then once you've put them underneath that center skinny braid pull them back towards you.And fasten together with a claw clip of your liking. This lovely butterfly clip is one of the things the girls "gave me" for Christmas -- only to be used in their hair of course! :) Once I had it fastened with the butterfly I sprayed the ends that were sticking out and used my flat iron on them to turn the ends up just a little.

Here's a view from the side. I'm thinking the butterfly might have been just a wee bit too big, but it sure looked pretty from the top!
Here's a view from the top of Christine's DD's head. And one of Goose. Obviously her head is a bit bigger so everything is spread out and spaced a bit differently. But I still loved how it all turned out.
I wasn't sure if I liked seeing the butterfly wings stick above her head (this probably would have been less visable if she had bangs or the clip was a bit smaller) but Goose was totally loving the look of having a butterfly perched on the top of her head!
And here's the front shot of Christine's absolutely darling little girl. Isn't she just the sweetest?!
Anyway, there you have it. Thank you again Christine for sending this fun hairdo to me. I hope I explained it right & did justice to it. The best part is I came up with a very slight alteration to this, that I'll post tomorrow. There's really only 1 difference from this hairdo, but it is totally cute as well. So look for that tomorrow.

"Caught Commenting" Prize & Other Biz

You may or may not remember a while back (before my mass giveaways during Christmas) I just randomly had a giveaway based on people who had commented on my blog on a random post. Well, whether you remembered that or not - I remembered and it's time for my random "Caught Commenting" giveaway/prize. At Gooses' school they have a little incentive for the kids to do nice things for other students called "Caught Caring" - well, here in Hairland we'll call it "Caught Commenting!"

So, this time I randomly chose the hair do I did 2 posts ago - Turkey/Bun Combo ... and since there were a "whoppin'" 5 comments - Random.org spit out this:

Love love love this one! Thanks for keeping up my lust for cute hairstyles. I appreciate your site and all the effort you put into it. I know it takes time to do these (let alone the time it takes to do your daughters hair) but you are appreciated. :)

So Vigh Household - this is what you get to choose from.... hopefully one of these will work for you or a special little girl in your life! I've got 3 headbands to choose from:

Choice #1 - Black & White Polkadot headband-

Choice #2 - Shiny Cream colored scarf headband (same type as I gave away in my 7 Days of Christmas in December - just cream this time). Sorry it's wrinkly - but that is easily fixed w/a flat iron!

Choice #3 - Black & Pink Polka Dot Headband -
So, Vigh Household, e-mail me and let me know what you choose & also your mailing address & I'll get one of these "beauts" sent off to you a.s.a.p. Thanks for taking the time to comment! Next time I do this it'll be one of the 2 remaining headbands I'll giveaway. So stay tuned!

Also - I keep forgetting to show you guys my fabulous Christmas present my crafty diva of a sister made me. I've seen so many fun ways to store bows or hang them up and kept meaning to make something or possibly buy something ... but I'm so glad I held off. My sister made this fabulous one for me - and the coolest thing is - it's magnetic! I have a bunch of little magnets that I use and the bows/flowers just stick right to it! I took most of mine off so you could see how cute it is. I almost feel bad covering this darling creation up with all our hair "schmuck" as they say in Germany! But I just had to share my latest addition to our hair obsessed house! :)

Here's a closer look at the top. So cute, don't you think?!

Oh, and last matter of business .... I had an e-mail from Angela's Accessories, saying they are having a Valentine's Day Giveaway - so head on over there to enter. Looks like they've got some cute stuff up for grabs. So click here to check it out.

Ok, I think that's it. Hope you guys have a great weekend! And don't forget to vote in my polls on the right side of my blog! Thanks.

Simple Braids & A Turkey Tail

Ok, first off, I promise this will be the last one of my "turkey tail's" for a while! I've just had so much fun with the "fan" or "spray" of hair like this I couldnt' resist posting another. So I hope you'll humor me! And secondly ... if you haven't noticed I've got a poll or two in my sidebar. Because some of this blogger & Google stuff is still so foreign to me, I'm just curious about a few things, so if you'd please vote so I can be better informed, that'd be great. ... especially if it means actually coming to my blog instead of viewing me through your reader.

This one is pretty much a no brainer and it's quite simple & quick. I started by making a zig zag part and then parting down to the ear on both sides. Do a simple 3 stranded braid (or whatever your forte is) and tie it off with a rubberband. Don't go all the way down, because you need hair to make the "fan."
Repeat to the other side and tie off with a rubberband too. I like to secure them both with rubberbands before joining in the back because that way I can play with the location of it all, how tight I want them to join, etc. without worrying about the braids unraveling on me in the process. Then join them in back. I always cross one over the other as I'm putitng the rubberband in to secure them. Somehow they just lay better for me. Oh, and ignore Goose and her lovely freak-o look she's got going on. She's recently discovered she can make nasty looking cross eyes and she's started doing it regularly when I take her picture. And as it is my motherly duty to tell her such BS ... I keep telling her they'll stick like that! :) Obviously it hasn't detered her one bit!
Once I've got them joined and sitting how I want, I pull out the 2 rubberbands from each braid and just leave the one in the center. Now it's time to flip the ends up to make the "fan", "turkey tail" or whatever in the heck this should be called! Take the ends and flip them upwards and secure it up that way with a rubber band.

Here's a view from the side. It kind of makes a little loop beneath the rubberband. And depending on what type of a clip you use, this is a good place to slide it through. But we'll get to that in a minute.Once you've got the hair flipped up I like to curl the ends down. It's your call on what you think looks best. I, of course, spray it a bit before curling and then piece it out so the hair spreads out nicely.

Add your accessory of choice and there you have it. I actually clipped this flower above the rubberband and it stayed nicely - but that little loop that the hair makes also makes it so clips don't slide out too. But whatever works for you.
She at least didn't try doing cross eyes in this pic! She's getting to such a silly age with some of the stuff she's been doing.

Oh, and P.S. -- I forgot, I did this on the Sunday before Christmas too. This isn't the greatest of pictures, but I did corkscrews with it this day and added a fabulous red flower I got from Maiden America. (And might I say again, how fabulous her clips are!) It looked so great with Goose's Christmas dress.
