Double W's

I'm sorry it's been a while since I last posted. The holiday weekend totally threw me off & there's been a lot going on here at home that's prevented me from being on the computer much. Plus, with summer coming & after next week the kids will be out of school - as most of you can probably relate, life just gets crazier once kids are around 24/7.

Anyway, this is nothing tough, and heck, maybe it's been done before elsewhere - but Bee has been learning her alphabet lately & loves singing the song. Of course, lots of the letters just sound similar to what they should be, but when she gets to the end she loves the "double U" (as she sings it) X,Y, Z (but she sings it "C" instead! So cute, I must say!) So, one day when she was singing & I was starting her hair, I figured why not do a letter? And so we did "W" - 2 of them. Or maybe it's a double "V" I don't know - either way it was alphabet related, at the time! :)

Part the hair smack dab down the middle -- or as close as you can w/a moving target known as a 2 year old! Then make 3 sections off that middle part. Just use the hair on the top of the head - not hair from the sides. Make 3 pony tails & secure each one with a rubber band.
Repeat to the other side. You will have 6 little ponytails.Join all 3 of them with another rubber band forming a W-ish or two V's (whatever!) Repeat on the other side.

Here's a look from behind. You can cover up the bottom rubber band with the accessory of your choice.

Here we used monstro tulips that I'd made. In the end I think she looked like she was wearing big earmuffs! She was totally hyper when I was trying to take these pictures so excuse her craziness & the weird shots!

Got her to slow down barely long enough for a frontal shot & a semi-fake smile! :)
If your toddler won't sit still long enough for 6 little ponies, you can also just make 1 W instead. Here I just made 3 parts from left to right across the top of her head. Then put a rubber band in below to form the W and attached a flower. Sorry for the bad pic on this too. She was eating lunch when I remembered to take any pictures!
That's it. It's especially nice because all the little baby hairs up front stay out of her face, and as the hot weather approaches, that's even better.

Fancier 3 Corkscrew Loopies

If you remember one of my recent posts 3 Corkscrew Loopies, I mentioned having a "fancier" version of that for you. Well here it is. You'll have to excuse the pictures & the way I documented this because when I started I had no idea where I was going with this! I did this 1 before I ever did the simple loopies do that I previously mentioned.

Begin by making the infamous "Barbie bangs" I've done in many of my hairdo's. Start at the right temple and make a diagonal part heading towards the left ear. Hold that hair with a clip out of the way.
Then from that part at the right temple, part on the right side of the head down to the right ear.

I forgot a picture from the top at this point- but here's a closer up view when I was done. I sort of start the right sided part a bit behind the left one so it kind of makes a point. For some reason, it's hard to explain this - but maybe better to understand w/the picture! :)

Anyway, then part the hair from ear to ear like you are going to make a 1/2 ponytail. But make it so you can't see your part through to the scalp. I do this by parting it up higher and then bringing the hair back down over it a bit & securing the hair lower. If you like, you can back comb the hair to give it a bit of "boof." I only slightly did this to her hair because she's not a huge fan of the "combing out" process afterwards! Secure the 1/2 ponytail with a bunch of X'd bobby pins until you feel like it won't be going anywhere.
Then just like in the simple 3 corkscrew loopy do I did before - take 3 sections from the ponytail hair and make individual corkscrews. Like I said before, I didn't know where I was going with this, so I just used clips to tie them off, but in the end I ultimately tied them off with rubber bands. So just tie them off. Remember - don't use ALL the hair hanging down from the ponytail.

Pull the ends of the corkscrews up to your row of bobby pin x's. Arrange them so they make little loops & then secure with bobby pins below the rubberbands so they don't slip out.
Now take the hair from the left side of the head that you had held out w/the clip and gently twist it inwards towards the head. While you are twisting bring the strand of hair back around the head to start covering up the bobby pins & rubber bands.
Using our little trick on how to hide bobby pins - bring the strand of hair clear across to the right side of the head where all your bobby pins stop. Secure with a bobby pin (aim the bobby pin back to the left so you hide it under everything.) Be sure to keep the tails of your corkscrews up on top of the head out of the way for now.

Then repeat on the right side. Twist the hair and pull it back and across the head towards the left side of the head (the twist was supposed to line up with the bottom of the half pony hair section sort of covering the "part" up like it did on the other side - but alas, it didn't!)

So here's the pic once I'd secured the right section of hair over onto the left side. See -you can't see any of those bright blue rubberbands or the seam of bobby pins, huh?! :) Success!
Now flip the corkscrew tails back down so they fall wherever. Spray them a bit with hairspray & then curl them & piece them out however you like.

And since I still had hair hanging down from the sections that crossed over the seam of bobby pins (on the left & right of the 1/2 pony) , I curled them too -so that's what those curls are that are on either side of the corkscrews.
I curled the ends a bit w/my flat iron & that was it. I think I had mine up too high the day I did this, because they seemed to all kink right where I started the curls. I hate it when I get that "curling iron line." Oh well.
A view from the side/top. Caught her mid sentence here w/the pursed lips!)Notice that you can't really see the curled hair above the top of her head, whereas, on the "simpler" version it was a bit spunkier and showed when looking straight onto Goose's face. Anyway, a very pretty do for Sunday or any other special occasion.

More Basics: Zig Zag Parts

Good Monday morning to everyone! Hope you guys had a great weekend. My weekend was FABULOUS -- know why? We found us another car. We've been doing the 1 car thing for over 2 years now *gasp* - just for the heck of it *yes, another gasp* and we finally decided the girls were squished in the back of our Camry. So we finally found a Toyota Sequoia that we loved & bought it. So I'm soooo excited & glad to have that off my "things to do list"

Anyway, just wanted to remind you not to forget to go over HERE to enter the dress giveaway from All Things Ribbon. It ends tomorrow just before midnight. So if you haven't yet -- go enter! Nothing beats a dress with a matching bow!!

Onto today's little 'tut. More "basics" here today on the zig-zag part. Sure most of ya'll do these, but thought I'd share my way. Most everyone I think just does it with a normal comb parting the zig zag one little section out at a time. I do it a bit different with my rat tail comb end. So here you go if you're interested. I didn't smooth things down completely away from the zig zag so well in the video, but obviously if you're going to do anything else with the hair you would! And of course -- don't push too hard with the end of your comb or you'll hurt that cute little head!

This is a little different than the bigger zig zags you might normally do. This is what I do in my hair - a closer together narrower zig zag & it kind of gives my part a bit of "oomph" that you don't get from just a normal ol' straight part. I don't do it so wide from right to left when using the tail of my comb, but they are quite close together front to back. Don't know if that makes sense or not! Anyway, this is one you can do on yourself or your DD. I don't know if you can see the difference between the 2 videos, but hopefully you can! Anyway, this is just how I do things & since this blog is about how I do hair stuff -- here you go! :) Have a great day!

The Basics: A Pull Through

***A FABULOUS GIVEAWAY UPDATE ***

So I'm a bit late on this & I owe Jen over at All Things Ribbon, an apology ... but she e-mailed me a while back about a fun giveaway and with all the stupid stress from trying to find a new car everything in my life has been out of wack. So here's the deal :

All Things Ribbon has just launched a fun new blog that is for her bow business, but also has hair tutorials & making bows - can't get much better than that. She is generously giving away a dress and matching bow. We got our Easter dress from her & LOVE it so you don't want to pass this chance up. Back before Easter she gave a dress away too, so you may want to follower her because I think it's in her nature to be generous like this & you don't want to miss out!
So head on over & enter to win the darling bow & dress. Don't forget to tell her Babes in Hairland sent you. I get extra "bloggy love" points in bloggy heaven for that! hehe :)

*************
I've had several people e-mail me recently about how I do "pull-through's." I finally got around to making a quick video to show you. Don't know if it'll help in your process if you struggle with these, but here it is nonetheless. For me, there are things that I just have to practice over & over until I feel like I've got them down & if this is the case for you w/pull through's -- as Mom's everywhere say, "practice makes perfect!" Good luck!

Hope this helps. I usually use a lighter colored rubberband so if it doesn't pull through as nicely as I'd hoped you can't see the rubber band glaring at you. I did a bright one so you could see it when I did the video, but this one came through nicely so you can't even see it I don't think.

3 Corkscrew Loopies

I thought I'd done this one before but after going through my files I guess I hadn't - so sorry that I don't have the step by step pix on this. But either way, it should be self explanatory & not too hard to figure out.

* Part the hair from ear to ear to make a 1/2 pony. Secure it with a rubber band.
* Pull 3 small sections from the pony tail & make a corkscrew out of each of the sections. (Don't use the whole ponytail for the corkscrews - there should still be most of the ponytail hanging down w/the rest of the hair.) Tie each of them off with a rubber band - but don't twist clear to the very end. (If you need help on how to do a corkscrew - watch my video HERE)
* Then pull each individual corkscrew up above the rubber band so they each form a loop. Secure the ends with bobby pins above the rubber band from your ponytail. If you have issues w/bobby pins holding hair, for this one it helps if the rubber band from the corkscrew is above the bobby pin because it can't slip back down through it.
* Curl the ends of the corkscrew sections and piece them out a little bit then add an accessory to cover the rubber bands & bobby pins.
Add a cheezy grin & that's it! You can rush out the door to school AND be on time! :)
I've got a fancier version of this do coming up - so stay tuned!

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner

I hope everyone had a wonderful Mother's Day weekend & that you were all pampered & treated wonderfully, like I know you deserve! I had a great day & all day, I kept wondering why there's only a mother's day 1 time a year?!! I mean, afterall, every other day is "Kids Day" isn't it?! :) Hmmm ... going to have to write Congress about that one! hehe

Also - thanks so much for everyone of you that wrote about your favorite things about your mom's and about being a mom. It was really fun to read everyone's thoughts (yes I read every one) on why they love being a mother and stuff about their mom's. Some of the comments reminded me about things I did w/my mom that I'd forgotten about! Hopefully it reminded everyone of good times & memories! I know it did for me.

Anyway, onto why you're all here:

Mother's Day Giveaway

*** THIS CONTEST HAS ENDED ****

I've been thinking for a while now that I wanted to have some sort of fun giveaway for Mother's Day - but it's not like it made sense to give you, the hard working ladies, bows, headbands and such. I wanted to give YOU something YOU could use. After all - YOU are the ones that come back regularly to check out my site and YOU are the ones that take the time to do the cute little heads of hair.

So .... I got thinking. I've got this great friend that is extra talented not just making darling vinyl stuff but also makes some wonderful jewelry watches. So since YOU make the TIME and take the TIME to do those heads of hair - I thought I'd give you the gift of time. Well, sort of! So how about one of these?
A beautiful beaded/jeweled watch. It's kinda stretchy so you don't have to undo it to put it on, but I wanted to unhook it so you could see the whole band.

Here's a closer look at the band.

But wait -- That's not all!

To pamper yourself a little, I'm also throwing in a $10 gift card from one of my favorite "smelly shops" - aka Bath & Body Works! I figure ya'll have earned it, right?! Yup, I thought so.

So both the watch & the $10 to B&BW goes to 1 lucky lady. You can keep them for yourself, or regift it if you want. Despite the fact that you'll get these after Mother's Day, it's the thought that counts, right?

Here's how to enter & you have 3 different chances to win. You can do it all at once, or you can come back later & enter so your name is mixed in w/others.

1 - Leave a comment & of course a way to contact you.
2 - For a 2nd entry, tell me your favorite thing or memory about your mom.
3 - For a 3rd entry, tell me your favorite part of being a mom (despite this being more of a girly site, if you've got boys that's just fine too)

This giveaway will end Saturday May 9th at 11:59 PM MST. I'll announce the winner on Monday 5/11 (if that's ok w/you that I take Mother's Day off from blogging! ;-))

And since I'm asking your favorite things I'll tell you mine -- One of my fond memories of my mom is her reading to us at night before bed & then we'd "draw on each others backs" before I'd fall asleep. Love you Mom! My favorite thing about being a mom is the snuggle time I get w/my girls as well as the hugs & kisses that are always given freely!

So there you have it. What are you waiting for? Go enter. Come back 3x if you want or do it all now. Whatever you want- just go!

Monthly Hair Share

It's that time again for our monthly Hair Share! I've got to say I'm sort of glad we're done with the "bad haircut hair share" I did last month. It was nice to finally see some "good do's" instead of bad ones this month! :) Sorry this is up a bit later than I'd hoped, but we're in the process of buying a new car & probably everyone knows that that just makes everything else get put on the back burner for a while. I must honestly say, I HATE CAR SHOPPING! :) It's even worse if we have to have the kids along. But hey, if anyone knows of someone wanting to sell a Toyota Sequoia please let me know!

So on with the show. These first ones are from Amanda. Her little girl is 2 and is just darling. I love this first pic not just for the hair - but for her shoes too. She's dressed to the 9's from hair to toe! :) She knows she's got it goin' on, huh?! Too cute.
I know I've seen this wonderful do over at Girly Do's. And to do it on a 2 year old is even cooler I'd say! What a trooper. She knows she's cute huh?! So sweet.
Seriously, she just makes me smile looking at those cute cheeks!
Our next set come from Patricia - or Zeemaid (sorry, I wasn't sure which you'd prefer to be called!) She's lucky enough to have a blondy & a dark headed girl. It's fun to see the contrast on hair do's in different colors of hair. Very pretty. Thanks so much for sending these.

And lastly, these next ones are from Laura. She's a lucky gal like me & has 3 darling little girls. Her oldest is 4 and then has two 2 year olds. Hats off to you Laura being able to hair on all 3 of the girls, let alone on 2 little 2 years olds!

I'm assuming these are some pics from Easter & I must say they are precious!
She knows how to assume the position just like Bee does! Too cute.I was so excited to see this next one. This is the fancy schmancy princess do I did months back & it's seriously one of my favorites. So I was thrilled to see it in her DD's hair. Gorgeous.
Just the cutest little smile - cheezin' it up for the camera.
And last but not least I think this one is my Cinna-buns. I couldn't get the picture big enough on my screen to tell for sure - so hopefully I'm right! Either way it turned out very pretty & I love the big flowers she used in her hair.
Thanks so much for taking the time to share with us all. This is what it's all about ladies. Keep 'em coming.

And on the hair accessory front - Bowdacious Baby has changed website address and can now be found HERE. Here's a little ad I got from her - so you've got 10 days to go stock up and get 20% off.

Also, more great discounts on accessories - over at All Things Ribbon - she is having a wholesale event for 3 days only (which translates to a couple bucks off each item if my calculations are correct - but don't hold me too it cuz my math stinks! :) ) It's from 5/5 - 5/7 on all corker bows. So if you're a fan of cute korkers head on over HERE now.
