Curvy-Swirvy New Year's Updo

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and that you're enjoying this holiday season.  I know we did - but now I'm trapped in the bathroom again with my not-so-little Bee at a 2nd attempt at potty training.  Yes, the first attempt several months back turned out to be a bomb, so we're at it again.  What a great way to spend my week when the girls are off school eh?  Not!  Anyway, things are going a bit smoother this time it seems, but that means my time here again on the computer is limited.  As I write, the "potty timer" is ticking away, so I'm typing in a furry! It's frustrating to have so many do's and no time to post them.

This one I did on Bug months ago, but thought it might be a good one if you are headed to a fancy-schmancy party & need an updo.  I'll admit, it's a bit funky, but it really looked cool!  You'll need some sort of pom-made or "goop" for this.  I have the "black & white" generic brand from Sally's and is the equivalent of "Slick Works" by Paul Mitchell.  See, I'm cheap!  Love this stuff though - I use it daily in my own hair.
Start by parting the hair from ear to ear and making a 2 ponytails.  I also parted the hair off center in front, like I always do.  I don't do too many hairdo's where I just pull the hair straight back - slick like.  I prefer some sort of part. Try pull the ponytail  on top down a bit so you don't see the part you made that goes ear to ear.  Secure each with a rubber band.
Having the hair pretty damp helps in this do.  And be sure to run a bit of "goop" down the ponytail (which I forgot to do) to help with fly aways.  Take the top ponytail and wrap it on the left side of the bottom ponytail.  Then bring it up underneath the bottom ponytail on the right side.
Continue to bring the ends of the ponytail up, and over the rubber band of the top ponytail.  Secure it with a bobby pin on the right side of the head so it doesn't fall back down.
Once you've secured it with the bobby pin, take the ends of the ponytail and tuck them underneath itself.  You've basically made an oval with that top ponytail.  The ends of the top ponytail will be covering the rubber band of the bottom ponytail at this point.
Here's a view from the left side.

Get out your "goop" and put a bit on the ends of the top ponytail that are sticking out right now.

Once you've put your goop on the ends, take the ends of the top ponytail and bring them back up and towards the front of the head.  Form a little "hook" or semi-loop with the ends and secure with a fancy bobby pin.  I'd loaned most of mine to a neighbor, so this 'do is lacking in the accessory department, but I found this one in the back of my drawer!  These "loops" won't hold very well unless you've got some kind of product in it - or you use hairspray and spray the heck out of it!

Take the bottom ponytail and make a twist braid/corkscrew twist.  Secure the end with a rubberband.

Wrap the twist braid around like you're going to make a bun.

Wrap it tight - or loose - whatever will make you end up on the top of the bun with the ends of your twist.  Secure the bun with a bobby pin or two.
Take the ends and tuck it under the straight part of the top ponytail and pull it out the other side - as shown.  Don't pull it out too far, because you can hide the rubberband nicely under the other hair this way.  I just pulled it out so you could see what I was doing!

Once again, apply some product to the straight ends of your twist.  Curl it with your fingers to make it look like a loop or a #6.  Secure it wherever you want on the head with a fancy bobby pin.  (I know mine isn't- but pretend!) Add plenty of hairspray or whatever you think you need to hold those little curves in place!
And here's your finished curvy-swirvy updo from the back.  Any type of shiny bling you could stick around on this would dress it up even more.  Or even if you had tiny little flowers or something to pin around.  Oh, so pretty.

View from the right side.  By pulling that top ponytail down a bit, you can't see the part you made from ear to ear very much.
And view from the left side.
Add some half eaten candy-corn, some home made bling around the neck and wrist, and a big smile, and you are all set to go to your hoppin' New Year's Eve party! LOL :)
I hope everyone has a wonderful NEW YEAR'S!  Make sure in those New Year's resolutions you might be making - that you include trying more fun hairdo's on someone - or yourself! :)

Christmas Star Headband

Well, I thought it looked like a star at least!  If you've been around BIH long enough, you know one of our favorite styles is one I did last December called the Dressed Up Headband.  If you aren't familiar with it, you'll need to go take a peek HERE.  Because I'm starting mid-hairstyle for this one.  It's nothing earth shattering - just a different way of pulling the hair over the headband.  But in the end sort of makes a star across the middle part of the headband.

Working with wet hair is the easiest on this style.  Make 5 little ponytails in the front of the hair - secure them with rubberbands.  (I start by making 1 in the middle and then 2 on each side)  Then put your headband in.
Then with the top middle pony, divide it into 2 sections and pull them far apart making an upside down V.
Sorry - weird angle on this pic.  On the pony to the right, divide it into 2.  Then pull the left section of that pony towards the left, to join the left section of the middle ponytail.

Then grab a little bit of hair behind the headband to combine with the other 2 sections of hair and secure it with a rubber band.
Move to the pony to the left of the middle pony.  Divide it into 2 sections.  Take the right section and pull it towards the right, to join it with the right section of the middle ponytail.
Take a bit of hair again from behind the headband and then secure all of them with a rubber band.  And there's your "star."  Yes, I know, it's missing a bar across the top of the star, but I kinda pretended the line from top of the headband took care of that! :)
With the remaining 1/2 of the ponytail that you didn't join into the star, pull it to join with the last ponytail down by the ear, and secure with more hair from behind the headband.  Repeat to the right side as well.
We let her hair air dry, and then we pulled it back into a ponytail, gave it a bit of curl, and tied the ribbon from the headband in a knot around the base of her ponytail.

Then you have one happy girl who's been wanting to wear this headband forever with her new Christmas dress!

Ni Hao Kai-lan Anima Buns

Weeks ago I was messing around here on my blog, and I noticed over on the left where my ads run, there was a cute little cartoon girl staring back at me!  Upon further investigation, I found out that the ad was for a TV show on Nickelodeon - or Nick Jr. called Ni Hao Kai-lan.  To let you in on a little secret -- we don't have cable TV (gasp - I know!)  We've never had it & don't need it - so there are so many shows out there I have never heard of - this being one of them.  Anyway, although I think this would look more "official" if my girls had dark hair, I thought Kai-lan's cute little "Anima buns" would be a cute do on Bee.

I started by parting the hair completely from ear to ear like you are going to make a 1/2 pony. But take the part more straight across around the back of the head.  Then I made a zig-zag part and sectioned it off into 2 little ponytails on each side and secured them with rubberbands.

I also left a tiny bit of hair out up front by the temple on each side, so I could give her some cute little curls up front since Kai-lan has bangs and some hair up there too!

Now, Bee's hair isn't overly thick, and to get the cute rounded "anima buns" we went for the rolled up sock trick.  Conveniently I had one of her little socks that had a hole in it, and so I just cut a hole in the other sock and we were in business.  You may have seen this on other sites, but just in case .... this is a fabulous way to give a bun a fuller look if you or your little one lacks in the hair department!  Take a sock - and because I'm working with Bee's hair we used one of her little socks.  (Use a sock color that won't show through the hair too!)

Cut a little hole in the toe of the sock.

Then roll it up so it has a more "flat" side --

and a more tire or donut looking side.

Put the flat side against the head and pull the ponytail through the little hole.

So in the end it looks like this - almost like you've got a round scrunchy that fits nicely around the ponytail.

Then spread the hair around the whole rolled up sock.  I experimented a bit, and on one side I ratted the hair a bit, and on the other side I just left it plain.  If you rat the hair a little bit, it gives it a fuller look to the bun, which in the end I preferred.  Anyway - spread the hair around the sock like this ...

Then take a little rubber band and stretch it around the whole "bun" so it holds the hair around the sock.  It'll hide up underneath the sock giving it a "donut" look.Spread the hair around as needed if you have gaps where the sock shows.

Then gather all the loose ends together and wrap them around the base of the bun.

Use a few bobby pins to secure the hair underneath the bun.

See-  the bun on the left is a bit fuller (plus her head is tipped funny) but that's the side I ratted the hair, and it gave it a bit fuller look.

When we got to this point of picture taking, she decided she was no longer in the mood, and I have a bunch of pictures of her scowling -- so just ignore all that, as well as her red little chin that she's decided she needs to lick all the time & cause to chap!

After we got the buns done, I curled the ends of her hair, as well as the little bits of hair I'd left out up front.  I sprayed those with a bit of hairspray first, to ensure they held the curl and stayed in "ringlet" form.

We almost forgot our little flowers like Kai-lan!  They added just the right touch!

And finally a smile!  She really liked her buns in the ends, and thought it was so much fun to tell everyone she had "socks" in her hair!
