Just Wondering Wednesday #8

I hope everyone is having a great summer.  I realized today my girlies go back to school in about a month's time & that's just crazy!  Summer has been flying by too quickly if you ask me!

Here's my question for this week.  I'm wondering ....
Are you a "salon product only" kind of person?
I mean -- will you only buy the products you use
in your hair (ie shampoo, pomade, etc.)
from a salon or beauty supply store?

Or... are you of the opinion all hair products
are pretty much created equal &
to heck what those salon folks say &
buy what ever is on sale at your local store?!

Up for grabs this week:
$5 gift card to Sally Beauty Supply
(You can put it towards fancy shampoo if you want! :-))

Remember - leave a comment here if you want to be included for this weeks gift card.  I'll do my best to get the winner announced on Friday.

And on a personal note .... can I just say .... I've had countless people tell me over the years that any more kids after you've had 3 kids is no big deal ... it's easy & not really any different than having three?  I'm sorry -- but I can't disagree more!  The new "babe" I mentioned a few posts back that I'm going to be watching temporarily isn't so much a "babe" I guess -- she's 3 1/2 like Bee -- but I am just worn out by the end of the day.  Maybe it's because it's like having twins.   I don't know.  But I don't agree with people who say more than 3 kids is no big deal! :-)    Anyone else been deceived by the whole more than 3 kids is no big deal thing?!  I guess I'm just not a wonder woman - so you lovely and amazing ladies out there with more than 3 kids - you are my heroes! :-)  Ok, I'm done with my soap box now!  Thanks for listening! LOL

I think you get what you pay for, but the expensive salon stuff you need far less of it to do the same job a grocery store/drug store product can do.

That being said, right now I'm more of a LUSH girl, but I prefer stuff with no (or very little) SLS. I'm actually thinking of going back to the NO POO way.

Laura said...

I think the salon stuff is probably a little better, but I'm too cheap so I just buy whatever I have a coupon for.

In regards to three kids... I think it's different when the kids are all yours and when you start with them from birth. That said, for me the transition from 2-3 kids was the hardest for me so far (I have four kids, going on five in the winter). I think it was hard for me because I went from having one hand for each kid, to not ever having enough hands.

Becky said...

I really like using salon stuff, but I am too cheap, so I will splurge sometimes on some things, and a lot of stuff I just buy at Walmart.

As for the kids, um no I don't agree that anything after 3 is easy. I have 4 and it's not super hard, but it's not easy and my 4th has taken the biggest toll on me. Hang in there!

Christy said...

For most things, I'm fine with what's at Wal-Mart, but I've been splurging more on detanglers at Sally's as my girls' hair has gotten longer. I still haven't found one I'm in love with yet, but hopefully soon! LOL

As for the kids.... there aren't any hard and fast rules about kids anywhere! Every family is different, every kid is different.... I do think it makes a difference if the kids are all yours, as Laura said. For *most* families I know with more, 3 seems to be the roughest number. Beyond that, there are olders to help with youngers and such, more kids to spread the chores out, etc etc. I dunno, I have 3 =P

Tina said...

I've been using Suave forever....still love it!

Malinda said...

I've never even tried the salon stuff because I don't want to love it then feel like I'm missing out when I go back to the cheap stuff. :)

Good luck with the extra babe!

JuliaVP said...

I buy the cheap stuff... even after a semester of beauty school where I was spoiled to get to try salon stuff frequently. There really is a difference, and someday when I have money coming out of my ears, I will probably splurge!

It's always incredibly hard to add on an extra kiddo that's not yours... Plus all the emotional stuff that's going on I'm sure. Hang in there.

CathyBB said...

=) Hope you're hanging in there! My friends with four or more kiddos all say the fourth one was their biggest change, so you aren't alone!

I don't usually use salon products (I'm too cheap, too!). I occasionally splurge on them and for about two weeks think it's the best idea ever. Then it starts to wane and I go back to the store stuff. Maybe I'm just crazy!

Lauren said...

I'm of the opinion that most hair products are created equal. I will say that the cheapest stuff is definitely too cheap to really use, but the more expensive shampoos (that I can get for really cheap/free with coupons) are all about the same. Why would I spend all that money on hair care when I can get just as good for free?

CodynStacey said...

I wish I was a salon only girl - I would love tons of products to put in my hair! But honestly I'm just a get whatever's cheapest girl. My wallet thanks me for that!

Janessa Couch said...

Awhile ago I saw something about conditioner that you buy in local stores and they said that the best was Tresemee so that is what I use and I love it. No salon products for me.

As for having four kids, I am 6 months away from my fourth and was looking forward to it being the same as three, dangit! :) I think my situation will be different though since my two youngest will be 6 years apart and my oldest is 11 so I hope to have a lot of help.

Katie, HappyGirlHair said...

I think it comes down to ingredients, particularly for those with tight curl and coils which are usually quite dry. There is a very big difference between products that utilize cheap ingredients like mineral oil and petroleum and those that don't. But some very expensive products have cheap ingredients that aren't best for curly hair, and some inexpensive products perfectly fine ingredients.

Most often, I purchase online or from natural food stores. Most products I buy are in the $12 for 8oz range and many last for a long time. No matter where I'm buying, and no matter what the price range, I want to see a full ingredient listing before I hand my money over.

THE ADAMS said...

I totally love salon stuff. You really do get what you pay for. I have thick long hair so I can never go for the combo stuff, it never works. I am partial to Matrix apple stuff....LOVE IT! But lately I have had too many doctor bills to buy it. :-(
As for the more kids...I think that it is hard when they are that close in age. I watch 3 aside from my 2 and the oldest is 6 1/2 the next is 4, only 10 months older than my DD and then my son is next at 18 m and the youngest at 9 months. It is hard, but I believe it would be easier if they were not that close together.
On a side note, and then I am done, I do all of their hair almost everyday and I have to laugh when my son pulls himself up on the chair that they sit on and wants his hair done too. So freaken cute.

Rachel said...

I would LOVE to be a salon-only kind of girl. I love salon products (Biolage has been a favorite for me for a long time) and I know they are better for my hair. But, on a tight budget (we're students), I use whatever is cheapest and usually get my stuff at Target. One day when the money is rolling in, I will use salon stuff again. And it will be a happy day!

Moffatzoo said...

We go threw the phases. I like Treseme' but just stocked up on VO5 because it was so dirt cheap 68 cents today. So it is what we will be using for the next 3-4 months.

C'est moi said...

I buy whatever's on sale at the grocery or drug store, although I have bought the generic brand at Sally's as well. I do use a salon product on my hair before I blow dry it, but that bottle's lasted over a year and isn't even half-way empty yet!

April said...

I used to be a Salon only girl, however after having 3 kids I have had to become more practical and now use whatever. I would prefer the more expensive stuff, but for now it is not an option.

The Pollocks! said...

I go cheap for shampoo & conditioner (although I have noticed that the cheapest stuff- with strange names- do not work very well at all) but that's directly related to how many kids I have. I have 5 of my own (4 are girls) 1 step son that comes for the summer and often somewhere between 2 and 4 more depending on how many foster kids we have! I buy a little more expensive products like spray gel and root lifter because we would be very sad, drowned mouse looking girls without a little help!

Having kids that don't "belong" to me in my house, I can definitely say that adding kids from different families to our home is a harder adjustment than adding a baby of our own making. Plus, the 3 year olds have always given me a run for my money (mine included!) It's just something about being 3 that makes life harder! You're doing a wonderful thing, so hang in there. It's hard getting someone new adjusted to your routines, relationships and everything - I totally understand! I just have to remind myself to treat those other kiddos the way I'd want my kid to be treated if they were away from me. =) Hang in there! Love your blog, by the way - we're on here all the time, I just rarely have time to comment (gee. . wonder why!)

Andrea said...

im good with any hair products personally the ones at the salon are too expensive for me anyways

Crystal said...

I'm too cheap for salon products...I don't usually buy whatever is on sale, but I buy my hair stuff at Wal-mart.

Heather said...

Hmmm...as long as you don't buy the very cheapest stuff, I think it's pretty much all the same for the average head of hair.

And I may not be the best person to ask about the more than 3 kids question because after my third, I had twins! And that was quite an adjustment! I now have 6 and that hasn't been bad at all. However, while I love having other kids over (sometimes), it makes my day much more difficult. I have another 3 year old coming over today to spend the next 2 nights with us, and while I love him sooo much, it's not the same as having your own from the beginning.

Hope I win the $5 so I can be cheap at Sally's!

Steph said...

I totally want to start getting Biolage shampoo and conditioner, but for now I'm too cheap. I can totally tell a huge difference with that stuff. As far as gel and hairspray I just use the cheap stuff for styling with my flat iron, etc. However, I use Big Sexy hairspray to get me some volume. :)

Liz said...

I am not picky on most things, but I do like a good pomade. Also I think it the fact that an extra 3 yr old was thrown into your life, 3 yr olds are hard especially 2 of them :)

Princess Hairstyles said...

I'm cheap and usually buy Suave but once in awhile I'll see Salon products on sale and snatch them up.

I've heard after 3 it's all the same too, but I don't believe it! 3yr olds are hard anyway. Can't imagine having 2 of them! Hang in there!!

Laura said...

Laura Wilkinson: I use salon products. I always watch for them to go on sale. My stylest always lets me know when to get them. I have also noticed that even though salon is more expensive I use 1/2 as much on my hair because it is better product. But for my "storage/backup" I have your typical store bought stuff that I got at a really good price with coupons.

Lindsey said...

Back when I was a young single gal I would splurge on salon products and then compromised after marriage by purchasing higher-end grocery-store products. Recently, however, I decided to give the Suave Professionals a try (GASP! I hadn't used Suave since I was a 'tween'!) and I must say that is sure compares nicely to my old Aveda Rosemary Mint Shampoo! I am sold!
About the whole 'any more than 3 kids is no big deal' issue, I just recenly had my third so I'm not much help there. I'll let you know how I feel when I reach that milestone (it should be a while).

Brandon said...

I normally use the store stuff, but just bought the Sally's brand of shampoo and conditioner to try. So we will see if I change my mind.

I only have 3 kids and they are all about 2 years apart. It is really hard to have them that close. When my sister and I are together we have kids the same age and it is crazy. So I totally understand about the 3 year old kids. I hope everything is going well for you and it is great that you have taken in this new "babe".

Sorry posts hubby's name

My sister is a hairdresser, so I rely on her to get me good deals and use whatever she picks up for me.

i am a loyal Panteen girl! nothing but the best for my long locks! lol seriously...i ♥♥♥ Panteen..have never found anything i like better. so store bought..not salon. :)

hang in there girl with the kiddos...school will be starting back soon and with the older ones be gone during the day, things might not be quite as stressful.
((hugs))

Personally I'm too cheap to buy salon stuff, so I buy the cheap stuff I'm in love with Herbal Essences!

Good luck with 4, I've got baby 3 baking in the oven, so I'm nervous about having 3 :)

mikeandkathyniles said...

I buy what is on sale at the store. I would rather spend my money on other things than expensive salon products.

I just had my 4th child 2 months ago. I believe it is easier this time around because I have been there before and not as stressed out, but it is also very exhausting because I chase 4 little ones.

Jessica said...

I am a grocery store product kinda gal. I can't make myself spend that much $ on something for my hair. Occasionally I do by more expensive product and I have never noticed a difference--better or worse. I also read a book by a gal who took the chemical components behind hair product and a lot of salon product didn't make the cut and she recommended Suave!

Vanden Flaus said...

Whatever's the lease expensive...

I admire you for taking on an extra child. We also have 4, and it's not always easy. I think it's different, though, when you start with them each as a baby. Then you kind of ease into all the different stages. Best of luck with it all...

I hate the grocery store stuff for my hair. I never feel like my hair is clean and it seems to leave a build-up. For my 5 year-old, it works fine. My hubby and I use salon shampoo and I think it works much better. As for other stuff, like hairspray, etc., I just buy that at the grocery store. You are such an amazing lady for taking on a 4th "babe"! What a wonderful thing you are doing for her. Hang in there.

Elizabeth said...

I usually buy whatever is on sale. The Body Shop had a hair line I used to love and then they changed it, and I don't love it so much anymore.

Jana said...

I am definitely a salon kind of gal thanks to my cousin getting me hooked on Joico shampoo and conditioner. But I will say I only buy it when I can get it on sale. Other wise I do use Suave, but I definitely don't like it as much as Joico

bubbles said...

i have 7 children, so i can't really afford to get salon stuff. so, i have tried to convince myself that the cheap stuff is just as good. ;)

as far as 4 being easier than 3...i would never say it is easier, but it's not as difficult if they are all yours and are staggered in ages. in your situation, it really is like you have an instant set of twins without the benefit of lots of time to figure out what works for you. my hardest transition was from 2-3. after 4 it wasn't that much harder for me because my oldest is 4 years older than #2, so by the time #5 came along the oldest was 12 years old (very responsible and a great babysitter) so she was a HUGE help with supervising some while i was dealing with others.

Jami said...

No expensive for me or my daughter. I think overall they are very similiar.

Camille said...

I was never a huge advocate of salon only products (even after earning my cosmetology license) because I am a tight-wad. I stock up on V05 and Suave when it's dirt-cheap. However, I don't know if my hair has just changed or what, but I cannot use that stuff daily any longer. Even in my daughter's hair it is a mess. I use it for my son and husband and it doesn't matter, but I get myself the liters of the salon brands when they go on sale.

Melissa said...

Thanks for the heads up on the more than three kids thing! :)

I am a drugstore haircare product girl. Salon stuff is good, but not enough to justify spending that much more money. I actually like the new Suave professionals line.

Cathy said...

A month!?? Here in the South school starts next week! But that's beside the point. I LOVE salon brands but I rarely buy them because of the price. My hair survives on the better brands found at Target.

Joleen said...

I personally like suave.

As for the 3+ kids....I agree with the countless comments before that it is easier if you start when they are babies, and when they are your own. ?I went from 2 to 4 when my twins were born, so I don't have any advise on going from 3 to 4. Sorry!
Hang in there!

jenny_moffat said...

I can definitely tell a difference. I love salon shampoo and conditioner. That is about all I use on my hair. The rest of the family is fine with walmart stuff. I only buy the stuff when it is on sale and I can usually find awesome deals, especially at JCPenney when the salon is clearancing out stuff.

Dreamweaver braids said...

For my sensitive scalp (psoriasis) I like the salon grade or SLS-free stuff. For my girls, whatever's on sale at WallyWorld.

As far as kids go, Going from 2 to 3 was not nearly as difficult as going from 3 to 4, especially since the 3 had a mom on bedrest for 3 months :P Totally understand your exhaustion!

Kristin said...

I'm salon only for my shampoo and conditioner. I don't like the way my hair feels when I use cheap stuff. I buy a lot of styling products at the grocery store.

Melinda said...

I have curly hair so product makes a LOT of difference. That being said I splurge on stuff that makes a bigger difference for me so I can save on the other stuff. Sometimes I can find salon products at a bargain at places like tj maxx if I don't go salon I try to go as natural as possible. As for the more than 3 kids I think it makes a difference when she's not technically yours by birth or adoption for some reason. Not that you love her any less, but its like changing diapers-it really is different for your own.

shandieleigh518 said...

i get wat is on sale! lol it all works the same for me :)

Bethany said...

I typically just pick up what ever is on sale or whatever is cheapest! That usually means Suave...most of their shampoos work just as well as more expensive brands!
Love your blog! =)

Peyton said...

I buy almost everything from your standard grocery store, and usually the cheapest brand I can find for finishing products like gel, but I have to admit a particular fondness for Redken's So Soft shampoo and conditioner.

Adam and Sarah said...

Back when my mom bought my shampoo and conditioner FOR me I was a Biolage girl. And I loved it. I miss it, too. But now that I am responsible for paying for my own hair products (and everything else!) I usually buy Tresemme. I don't think salon is ALWAYS better, but I think some of it can be. There are so many things I'd rather splurge on than shampoo and conditioner (can you say CLOTHES and SHOES?!?).

Juliet said...

I am a Pantene girl as well! Must be nice to be able to buy the expensive salon stuff, but I've been fine with others!

Denise and Brandon said...

Anything on sale for me!!! It's all the same.

I think if it's not your own kid it's so much harder no matter how many there are.

Heather said...

I didn't even know there was such a thing as pomade still around. I thought that was what the men used decades ago. :) I'm pretty low maintenance--suave is also what I use. But, it treats me well.

Good luck with the extra kiddo!

Newman Family said...

I buy what's on sale at the grocery store. I definitely like salon products better but I think they are way over-priced.

And the more than three kids thing. I think that's only true with your own kids. It is way different/harder when it is someone else' kid.

Vera said...

ok so for the salon products question, i buy what works best, sometimes it's a salon product, but most the time it's a generic of a salon product that works just as well.

As for the extra kids thing.
I had three girls and baby sat another girl who was the same age as my youngest and i was so dead by the end of the day, but it was partially because they were the same age and it was still quite young, so it was hard. I thought maybe it was just cause the fourth wasn't mine and that's always harder. But i have since had a fourth child and no...four is just cruel and way harder than three, maybe when he's not a baby anymore it won't be as hard, but four is kicking my butt way insanely more than two or three ever did!!!

Leia said...

I never use salon products. Not since I was a kid and my mom bought them for me! ;)

As for the kids thing - I have a home daycare, so I will NEVER poo poo the fact that any more than one kid is hard to handle! Hang in there!! :)

Delany said...

I use a little bit of both i manly use the store bought shampoos and conditioners and salon styling products and some store bought gel. But I do not under any circumstances believe that all hair products are created equal because they aren't. I have curly hair and i know that not every hair product is what it says it is. The people who create it are just trying to make money off people that trust hair products too easily

karynval said...

just some encouragement from me...mother of triplets...having kids that are the same age makes things harder. addind another kiddo the same age as yours, and EVERYTHING DOUBLES!! I also have always thought that the terrible 2's were a breeze compared to the absolute mayhem that 3 yr olds can create!! just remember, this too shall pass, and you will look back, and wonder how you ever did it!! thanks for sharing, I love your blog, you are an inspiration!!

becksalottery said...

My father is a mudblood of Greek origin and my mother is a solid mix of Scottish, Irish, and Cherokee Indian (she's always had perfect spiral curls, big green eyes, and pale skin, you'd never know her mother was half indian!!), and that... sadly, left me with the worst genetic coding possible when it comes to the hair on my scalp. Thick, wiry, each individual strand is truly just frizz. That's it. My natural hair texture? Frizz. Period. =_= You know what chemical relaxers do to my hair? Absolutely nothing. Seriously. My hair laughs in the face of relaxers.

I have to say that products have made ALL OF THE DIFFERENCE with my hair. So yes. I admit it. I am a salon snob =P I had Coppola's Keratin Smoothing Treatment done a few months ago and I have to say that it was SO WORTH the money spent. And the product line that come with-- the Keratin Replenishing Cream, especially-- are absolutely AMAZERING. Like, "Oh my gosh my hair is baby soft!" amazing. My hair totally went from looking like I'd just stuck my finger in a socket to looking like that chick in the Garnier Fructise commercial. My hair has never felt or looked healthier, and it stays that way since the need for a flat iron is almost nonexistent. Cheap styling tools and creams and all of that junk is just a complete waste of money, and not to mention most of it is HORRIBLE for your hair (ie, sulfate is BAD).

But, for a kid, who probably has decent hair to begin with, it probably doesn't make a difference.
