Flipped Braids through a Beanie

Hopefully you are all pretty much ready for Halloween since it's just a few days away.  Thankfully I am, but for some reason I am feeling a bit stressed about it this year.  I don't know why but I just am!  Just a reminder that if you still need a last minute hair idea - you can go HERE to see the ones we've got!

I don't know that I've ever posted anything using one of these darling beanie hats - but lately this beanie from All Things Ribbon has been a fav at our house.  Goose's head is way too big for it, so it's usually Bug and Bee that are in competition for it!  It's great on those school mornings when we're in a hurry or need to cover up an "oops!"  But they are also just so stinking cute that we use them even when that's not the case!
If you don't own one of these - you can get them from All Things Ribbon or a lot of the other hair accessory places I have listed under my tab at the top of my site.  I think you can even get them at places like Target and stuff now too.  They are lots of fun & with the weather getting a bit colder they are great for the Fall weather.

This is what we recently did on Bee & it really is a piece of cake.  Part the hair to make 2 Pocahontas braids.  I promise her part is pretty straight, but that neat seam on her hoody certainly makes it look like it's not!

Put your beanie hat on.
Find a hole that is just above the braid -
Flip the braid up and through that hole.  Pull it through just enough that the "tail" doesn't stick straight up.  I curled the ends slightly with my little curling iron too.  Our beanie is snug enough that the braid will stay like this.  If you feel like it's going to slide back through, you could certainly tie a cute ribbon through and tie a bow or hide a few bobby pins in there to hold the braid in place.
Add a fun bow/flower up front and you are good to go!  This fun one is also from All Things Ribbon.  If I haven't said it before - we just LOVE All Things Ribbon
Here are all the different views:

She just all smiles when she gets to wear this beanie!  Especially when she "wins" and Bug doesn't get to wear it!  Ahh, gotta love sibling rivalry!

Oh -- and I almost forgot ....
Bee says "Boo and Happy Halloween!"

Hairdrying Tip

Something I thought worth mentioning is how we dry the girls hair.  If you've been around long enough here at BIH you know I don't wash the girls hair every day.  That also means that I'm not drying their hair every day because I don't want to use excessive heat on their hair.  Some of you may prefer to let your hair or your dd's hair air dry - which is great too.  Depending on time I let that happen too and just finish drying it with our hair dryer before bed.  I find that if I let my girls go to hair with wet hair or damp hair it is a HUGE rats nest in the morning.

One thing my sister taught me, who is the actual hair professional, is it's not a real good idea to dry your hair pointing the hair dryer up - against the direction the hair grows.
If you tend to do this & notice your hair or your dd's looking like it's got a ton of fly away's or it looks "endy" once it's dry - this may be part of the reason.  If you are blowing the air up the shaft of the hair instead of down it's going to give you a different result all together.

So be sure to aim the nozzle of your hair dryer down in the direction you are drying.  I find the girls hair looks so much shinier and smooth when it is all dry.
Usually at bed/bath time we are running around crazy trying to get everyone done before it gets too late.  Somehow we happened to have some extra time the other night & the girls were being silly and wanting to see who's hair was the longest.  I rarely have them "lined up" next to each other to be able to tell and their hair is up a lot too - so it was fun to see.  We thought we'd share!  It's crazy how fast Goose's hair grows because she cut it off just before we started this blog & now it's almost as long as Bug's!
If Bug were taller sitting next to Goose you'd be able to see that their hair is almost the same length.  Goose just has much thicker hair & Bug's is getting wavier under there still!  And then there's Bee - our little toe head!  Seeing them all lined up like this makes me realize it's been a while since I last trimmed their hair.  Add that to my "to-do list!"
Anyway - hope the hair drying tip helps some of you.  Try it & see if you notice a difference.

Oh, I also just wanted to let those of you that are planning on going to the Halloween event down at the Gateway that I posted about HERE -- I got an e-mail saying "in case of rain it will be held at the Grand Hall in the Union Pacific building, which is directly east of the Olympic Legacy Plaza at the top of the stairs."

And don't forget that today is the last chance to enter for the 3rd set of Disney on Ice tickets.  So go HERE if you are wanting to enter.  The winner will be announced tomorrow!  Have a great Friday everyone. :-)

Halloween Spider Hairdo

Really quick I first wanted to show you how the Rolled Braid hairdo that I posted HERE yesterday looked on Bee, as she sported two of them - because that's how the whole spider idea came about.
For non-Halloween hair follow the same instructions as I did in yesterday's style except part the hair and make 2 ponytails & secure them with rubber bands.
Then braid each pony tail & secure them with a rubber band.  Then roll them up as shown in the previous tutorial.  Secure them with a few bobby pins & curl the little "tails" that stick out on each side.
So you'll now have 2 cute rolled up braids on each side of the head & it should look something like this:

For the Halloween Spider you of course will need a few supplies:
*Rubber bands
*Ribbon (preferably black)
*Bobby pins or Hair pins
*Hot glue gun (or favorite type of glue)
*All your normal hair styling tools & possibly pom aid or some type of goop!

Part the hair for ponytails & make one on each side of the head.  Add your ribbon - make sure it's just a bit longer than the ponytail to make sure you have enough.
Pull the ribbon around so it's on the under side of the ponytail.  I thought I had a different roll of black ribbon but this was all I had so I went with it.  A wider grosgrain ribbon would have been preferred so there would be more black in the braid.  Oh well.
Braid the hair and be careful to try keep the ribbon on the under side of the braid as you plate it.  The under side is what will show so that's where you want the ribbon to be.
Here's the under side of it where you can see the ribbon.
Secure the braid with a rubber band.  If you have extra ribbon coming out in the tail of the braid -
Be really careful & cut it off!  Leave just enough that it is still secured in the rubber band.  This part won't show because it'll be rolled up inside.
Divide the tail of the braid in half so each part sticks out on the sides of the braid as you roll it up.  Again, if you aren't sure what I mean - refer to yesterday's post!
Roll it up & secure it with bobby pins.  Then you've got the tails sticking out like this:
This is where you might want some "goop" to separate the "spider legs" nicely.  If you don't have any product just get them nice and wet & spray them with hair spray.  Make 4 separate sections on each side of the rolled up braid.  We want to have it have the correct number of legs, right?!
I curled the ends under slightly with our little curling iron.  You could even flip your curling iron upside down and press it on each of the "legs" and give it more of a kinked look like a spider leg might have!  You can leave it like this if you want - but we wanted to go a bit further.
Enter all the other supplies:
Glue 2 googly eyes to a strip of ribbon.
Flip it over & add some more glue - then add a bobby pin or hair pin.  I then doubled the ribbon back over on top of it to cover that all up & make it a bit sturdier.  Note:  I attached 2 eyes because Bee's little "spider bodies" aka rolled braids are very small & there wasn't going to be enough room to jab 2 more pins each holding one eye.  So I opted to glue them both on one pin.  Hope that makes sense.
Your finished little eyes should be like this:  Or you can just glue one eye to one pin and have 2 sets of them for each spider you make.
Sorry this pic turned out a bit blurry or something.  Hopefully you can spot our spider in here!
 A view from behind:
Bee was so ecstatic that she had "spiders" in her hair & she told everyone we saw at the store about them!  These were a kiddo & a crowd pleaser!  Perfect for the days leading up to Halloween or any fun Halloween party where costumes may not be worn.

Also - to let your creative juices flow .... you can really decorate these any way you want.  You can do one big one of any these ideas:  they could be bats, little butterflies, lady bugs,  crabs or even an elephant (if you look at Goose's from yesterday I think it sort of looks like one!)   Have fun being creative! The sky is the limit with these!

Oh, I almost forgot.  I do have a few other Halloween hair ideas lurking around in the archives - so head HERE to see some of mine - as well as ones others have sent me in years past.

Rolled Up Braid

First off -- just to let you know the next set of trivia questions have been posted over HERE for your chance to win the 3rd set of Disney on Ice tickets.  If you're interested head on over!

As I briefly mentioned yesterday, this is an idea that Goose came up with.  I've got to admit, there are days when I get an idea for a style & I'm bouncing off the walls to try it out & I can't because the girls are at school. On days like that I feel like I'll go crazy if I can't get my hands on some hair!  But then there are days that are completely the opposite where I feel like every ounce of creativity that I have in me has been flushed right down the toilet!  The day we did this style was one of the latter.  I sat and brushed through Goose's hair just in a daze not really feeling like doing much of anything besides a ponytail.  She asked for a braid.  She got a braid...
Then she said she had an idea for me to "roll" the braid up to her head.  That posed a problem because the ends of the braid came spraying out.  Enter Goose's further creativity .... She came up with this song for the instructions ... (Sung to the melody "Row Row Row Your Boat" sort of!)

Roll, roll, roll your braid
Gently up your head
Add a few bobby pins
This is what we did

Well - there's just a little bit more to it than that - so I'll fill you in on the rest of it if you keep scrolling down!
Divide the "tail" of the braid in half...
Begin to roll the braid in toward the head - with half the tail poking out on the right side of the braid & the other half of the tail poking out on the left side.
As you are rolling the braid the tails should look like this:
Roll it up as far as you can to make it snug against the head.
We added bobby pins at first to hold it but because her hair is so thick & heavy we added our trusty Spin Pins from Goody after wards to give it added security.
Once you have it secured the ends should spray out all willy-nilly on either side of the rolled up braid.
We sprayed the ends a bit and ever so slightly turned them under with the flat iron.  You could just mist them with hairspray them and flatten them out so they "fan" out a bit more.  That'd give it a nice fun & funky look - more than this already had.

Here's a look up close.  We've since done a few other fun variations with this that I'll show you soon.  This really was a quick & easy one that you could do on those mornings when you want more than a braid but something a little different than your typical bun.  Just remember Goose's cute little song -- Roll roll roll your braid ... gently up your head .... and you'll be set to go!  I'm just glad when my creative juices weren't flowing Goose stepped in and saved the day!
