Other Simple Patriotic Do's

As I've been uploading a ton of July pictures from my SD card to my computer I realized I had both of these on there as well.  I figured I might as well share them now or they'd be lost in my archives for good!

If you've been around from Babes in Hairland's infancy, you'll remember when I did The 7 Days of Christmas - Hairdo's and Giveaways.  That's when I first introduced "Hair Fancy's" as I know them.  Check out how little Goose looked & how short her hair was when we first tried these out back in 2008 HERE!  Wow how time flies!!!  I know there are other things similar out there, but these are simply called "Hair Fancy's."  Goose thought it'd be fun for one of the rodeo's we went to, to have the red & white stripes in her hair across the front, so this was the look we went with:
Then to add our red & white bows in back, Goose suggested we slide the clip of a smaller red bow through the top loop of the big white bow - both came from All Things Ribbon.  These basic bows are some of our fav's and get used on a regular basis at our house!

And for Bee we did a simple pull through on top and pulled the rest through into a messy bun for long hair.  I posted the video for that HERE.  Then we put "fireworks" in her bun using the technique Jenn @ Girly Do's posted forever ago HERE.  Her post had disappeared off her blog & she was kind enough to dig through all her pictures and repost it recently!  This is a great one if you're short on time or "accessories" for any festive occasion!

Once I made our bun - I put the ribbon on our hairpins and stuck them randomly in her bun.  I told her they were "fireworks" and she was all kinds of excited!  Nothing but silliness for all the pictures because of it ...
See?  Pure giddiness & excitement?!  She wouldn't hold still or be serious for a single picture!  That's when I know I've done my job well! :)

Vertical American Flag Hairstyle

I realize the 4th of July is over, but for us locals, we still get to celebrate Pioneer Day on July 24th.  That means more fun & festivities with fireworks, parades, rodeos, and all the fun associated with the Days of '47.  And of course, that calls for another patriotic hairdo for all that fun!

We actually did this on the 4th of July in Goose's hair when we were in a local parade and she loved it.  She was wearing it yesterday too and she got so many comments on it!  It's definitely a crowd pleaser!
Make a ponytail.  (You could do this with pig tails - one on each side of the head & it'd look cute too -- but keep in mind the ribbon makes it a bit stiff!)
Divide the ponytail in half.
Divide the left side of the ponytail in half again.  You will make 2 little pony tails with these sections of hair.  Use a small rubber band and get it as close to the base of your main ponytail as possible.  Add a piece of ribbon twice as long as the ponytail and slip it under the little rubber band.
Make your 2nd little pony tail, repeating the process, adding white ribbon to the 2nd ponytail.  At this point you will braid the ribbon into each ponytail.  I did a 4 Strand Braid with Ribbon in it .... you can watch my video HEREIf you do that braid, you'll need to be sure to pull the ribbon to the underside of the ponytail before you start braiding.
Braid the ribbon into the hair & secure at the bottom with a rubber band.
Repeat the process with the section, using the white ribbon that has been pulled to the underside of the pony.
Repeat the 4 strand braid process with the ribbon in it and secure the bottom with a rubber band.
Once you've finished the 2 braids on the left - repeat the process with the remaining hair on the right side of the ponytail. Repeating red & white ribbons.  It'll look like this from the top of the base of the ponytail:
When you're done with all 4 braids they'll hang down every which way.  You could do as many of these as you want to so you'll have more of the red/white stripes for the flag...
Get the braids somewhat positioned how you want and then tie them off at the bottom with another rubber band.  I let the ribbons just spray out at the bottom to add a bit more color to it all.
To keep the braids from separating, I randomly took a few bobby pins and slid them down so they grabbed each side of a braid so they'd stay together.  You can do this from behind the "flag" or from the front.  They are pretty easy to hide as long as you slide them right down the sides of the braid.  I a couple down each  length of each braid.
Top the red & white stripes off with the "blue" & you've got your vertical flag!

Goose loves this one -- I think it's because she can make her ponytail "swish" back and forth so much more!  But flags are supposed to wave, right?!
Here's a few shots from our 4th of July parade fun.  The girls loved riding on the float with the Rodeo Queens and showing off their patriotic hair!
I think I posted this one of all us gals on FB already -- but just in case you missed it -- here I am with the 3 Babes!
If you aren't from around here, put this one in your back pocket & plan on it for next 4th of July!  Or you could totally do this with your favorite team colors, or for another fun and special occasion!  Feel free to share your pictures with us on our FB page if you try this one!

Quick Half Up Ponies & Messy Bun

I did this months back on Bug for Easter and realized we'd never done an actual tutorial on it.  It's quick & easy and perfect for summer or when you're in a hurry to get out the door to school.  It's great for every day wear or can be dressed up by adding a fancy accessory and curls to the hair that is hanging down.

Make a part on the top of the left side of the head and then branching off of that, section off hair to make a triangular part to form a pony tail up front by the temple.  Secure the little ponytail with a rubber band.
Behind that ponytail part out another section of hair behind the ear and include the 1st ponytail you made.  Combine it all to make another ponytail and secure it with a rubber band.
Repeat this a 3rd time, parting out more hair making a 3rd section.  This time once you've wrapped the rubber band around several times, don't pull the hair all the way through to make a ponytail - leave it as a loop.
If you want, add another rubber band at this step to ensure it stays secure.
Make a messy bun.  I did one my way - you can watch my video HERE.  I used little bobby pins for this one since I'm dealing with a smaller amount of hair & I didn't want the larger pins to stick out the sides.
I slightly curled the ends that hung down from the messy bun with my flat iron, turned the ends of her hair under, as well as curled random pieces for added texture.
We added a cute little flower from Gimme Clips up near the messy bun and that was it.  Quick, easy & cute.  Can't get better than that!

Flashback Friday

I don't know why but with the holiday & a whole bunch of other things, this week has just flown by & I haven't had time to sit down and get any of my new do's posted.  So I'm tagging along w/Girly Do's for a Flashback Friday today!  This is one I did clear back in the beginning months when our blog was in its infancy!

It's quick, easy & perfect for a hot summer day.  This is one is fun to play with & add different flowers or bows to for more pizzazz!  It's our "Looped BraidClick on the picture if you'd like to head back in time!

We hope everyone's having a great summer & have a great weekend!

American Flag Hair

I always love this time of year and every single thing associated with July 4th.  I realized that in all the hairstyles I'd seen out there and in everything I've done too, I didn't remember seeing an actual flag, so we jumped right in and this is what we came up with.  It is definitely one you can alter to your abilities or liking - but this is the basic idea of what we did.

Part the hair smack down the middle from front to back.
On the right side make a small pony parting it from the center part down to the ear.
Here is where you can do things according to your preference. I did a 4 strand braid with ribbon in it.  I like how the ribbon runs straight down the middle & that's exactly the look I wanted for this flag.  You can see my how it looks in a basic ponytail here - or watch the how to video HERE.  But like I said - you can do whatever kind of twist or braid at this point - just add your red ribbon.  You will need red ribbon twice as long as the hair in the ponytail - plus a little bit if you want it to flair out at the end for some "spunkiness!"  Braid all the way down and tie off at the end with a rubber band.
Part off another section and secure with a rubber band.  Repeat the braiding process, adding ribbon, etc.
Repeat with the remaining hair in the back.  You can do this with as many sections as you want - I just wanted to have three.  Remember, the ribbon for each ponytail needs to be 2 times the length of the pony plus a little bit!
On the left side, repeat the same process - but use white ribbon.  (If I could redo this, I wouldn't have used the blue rubber bands - I would have stuck with the red for everything - but Bug wanted blue on that side!)
Once you have 3 red braids on the right and 3 white ones on the left start the process of crossing them back & forth and securing them.  Depending on the length of hair you are working with this will vary also.  Some of the braids I anchored using the same technique I do from THIS old hairstyle (tucking through the base of opposite ponytails), but other spots I just bobby pinned the heck out of things to hold them in place!
Because I was in a bit of a hurry, things didn't match up quite like I'd envisioned so I just laid things how I wanted, and if I was able to tuck things through other rubber bands I did, if not I bobby pinned it in place to lay how I wanted for the red & white striped affect.  I wanted it to be a fun & playful style too so I kept the ends poking out with the ribbons spraying out as well.  You could certainly tuck all that in if you don't want that.  (And yes, my white ribbon is a titch wider than my red!)  Trim you ribbons that spray out if you feel any of them are too long.

** If you are working on longer hair, you could totally double the hair back & make the stripes double thick, or if they aren't long enough to go back a full 2nd time across the head just pin them up and hide things.  Remember - bobby pins are our friends! ***
Then I added our "blue" section of the flag that I'd bought ages ago from a dollar store & our flag was complete!  You could put any number of things here to substitute it.  Bug was quick to point out we didn't have any stars. :)  Oh well - I can't do everything right! LOL  I guess I could have blinged it out with our i-rock tool from Gimme Clips or something.

Like I said - the idea is pretty basic - the 3 pony tails down each side - just add your ribbon in however you wish and then pull them across.  If you haven't mastered the 4 strand braid yet, then obviously this could be tricky - but there are so many fun ways to tie ribbon in this can work just about any way possible!  Then anchor those cute things across for the stripes & you're good to go!
Add your flag shirt, and a semi-toothless smile & you don't get much more patriotic than that!  Bug was pleased as punch with her hair & everyone who saw us loved it too!  You're bound to get lots of compliments & head turns sporting this fabulously patriotic style over the 4th of July!
We'd love it if you shared your pictures with us on our Facebook page if you end out trying this fabulous do!  We wish everyone a fabulous & safe 4th of July holiday weekend.
